Alan Lomax recordings
Early in the Mornin'
Question : What elements about this performance let you know that the men are suffering?
Bonus : What song would you sing if you were forced into slavery?
Welcome to my all things creative music blog. I love interesting ways of looking at things and making correlations with subjects that normally would not be associated with each other. Here you will find videos of music performances, tutorials, and editorials about the ever changing world of music. If you have questions about music, feel free to post. I will do my best to find the best possible answer available to me and the world wide web.
Well I don't really know , ummm I can't really understand what they are singing, it sounds more like yelling . Or that they are tired , or annoyed , they are obviously not happy .
ReplyDeletethe sound of pick axes in the background, them not being in harmony with each other, and they just sound unhappy.

The way they sing it lets you know that they are not that happy
ReplyDeleteThe tone on their voice gives off a sad and scared feeling.
DeleteThe uneven singing, The pick axes, sounds like forced labor to me.

with the tone of their voice and the pickaxes in the background you are able to tell that they are not happy
ReplyDeleteThe tone and feel of the music. You can hear the pain in their voices. They also become out of breath.
ReplyDeleteBonus: I can't really think what I would sing if I were a slave. Not sure singing would come to my mind.
You can tell they're suffering because you can hear it in their voices. The pain and sorrow is very evident in the way their singing. They sound sad. It's hard to explain it any further, but sometimes you'll hear moaning.

ReplyDeletewhen thy sing and the pitch go up the down and it sound like a moan and the uneven sound
ReplyDeleteActually I didn't realize the men were in distress it just sound like weirdness to me.
ReplyDeletethe uneven pitch of the singing gives a grieving feeling to the men.
ReplyDeleteWell this isn't recorded in a studio this was probably recorded using a recorder of some type. You can obviously tell the distress these men are in due to the axes hitting the ground and the hard breathes taken by the men singing. Another way to tell are the men are not really singing as a chorus they are sending a message to each other in a way the slave masters wouldn't understand.
