They have to be honest, but not rude. They must at least try to listen when you have something to say whether they agree or not. If they want my respect, they must respect me.
Basically just by being honest and nice. If someone's a jerk to me, I'm not going to respect them. Same goes for if they're a compulsive liar. Also, they must respect me if I'm ever going to respect them.
People can gain my respect from how kind they are.

By being a good person and being able to balance thinkin of others and themselves.
